Richard Western Website

Richard Western is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of agricultural spreaders and trailers. It is a well-established, family owned business based in Suffolk, with over 50 years of proven experience in their field. The existing website had become stagnant, so they appointed Bigfork to freshen things up.

The Brief

Our job was to design a new website that positioned Richard Western as a high quality, reliable brand. Farmers are at the mercy of the unpredictable British weather, and cannot afford for their machinery to break down during harvest.

Richard Western have a large range of machines and the website needed to promote the quality of every product, as well as making it straightforward to find out details and compare product specifications.

All products are sold through a nationwide network of dealers, so it was important that users could easily locate and contact their nearest dealer.

The new website had to be responsive to cater for the growing number of users visiting on smartphones and tablets.

The Process

Planning is key to the success of any new website.

We spent time with the Richard Western team learning about what makes their products special, analysing their competitors, and discussing the content their site would need to achieve the objectives.

We used this information to decide on the pages for the new website and how to structure them for easy navigation. Our focus is always making websites easy to use. 

The visual style is deliberately striking, using bold fonts and colours to create a strong and robust design.

Combined with large product photography, a modern layout, and clear messages, it really reflects the Richard Western brand values of quality, durability and reliability.

It’s all about the product

Richard Western’s customers buy their machinery for the quality and it was vital the new website design showed this. Each product page is carefully designed to show features and benefits, product image gallery, videos, downloads and optional extras.

Many of Richard Western’s products have several specifications, so we designed a compare feature to help people choose the right one.

Find a dealer

Richard Western’s products are sold through a nationwide network of dealers, from Redruth in Cornwall to Aberdeen in Scotland. We designed a “Find A Dealer” page showing all their dealers on an interactive map, where users can locate and click on listings to view contact information.

A postcode lookup feature also allows people to enter their postcode and find their nearest dealers.

The website also houses a dealer login area where dealers can access information, submit documents, and update their map listings.

Designed for mobile

The old Richard Western website wasn’t mobile friendly, and the analytics showed a large number of users were using smartphones to access it.

We made sure the new website was fully responsive and designed to work effectively on mobile and tablet, making it easier for everyone to use.

The Results

Apart from being well received by client and customers alike, compared to the old website we’ve seen positive changes with website visitors spending more time on the new website and looking at more pages.

  • Bounce rate reduced – from 34% to 24%
  • Pages viewed increased 24% – from 3.3 pages per visit to 4.1
  • Session Duration increased 38% – from 2.25 minutes per visit to 3.11 minutes
